February 27, 2015

It's another theme week here at Song Of The Day Fridays! Thought we'd double your pleasure for once! We were tasked to pick TWO songs by a famous Duo. Now this could be a band of only two members, a band with two prominent members or a pair of artists who have collaborated together several times. Let's see what Rob went with first...

Rob

The Postal Service - "Such Great Heights"

Mr. T

Hall & Oates - "I Can't Go For That" & "You Make My Dreams Come True"

G-Man

Sky - "Some Kind Of Wonderful" & "Love Song"

Rob

The Fully Down - "Cost Of Comfort"

Mr. T

Paul McCartney & Wings - "Maybe I'm Amazed"

G-Man

Semisonic - "Singing In My Sleep"

No real reason behind this pick. Just a great song by a band that are often blown off as a "One Hit Wonder". Sure "Closing Time" was their highest charting song, but they had plenty of other good tunes. 'Secret Smile" and "All About Chemistry" come to mind. "Singing In My Sleep" Check it out. 90's gold.

"Companion (Lay Me Down)" - Wide Mouth Mason

While most would think this pick is made in relation to Valentine's Day, you are partially right! But I have to admit that Wide Mouth Mason wrote tons of great songs, Companion has always been my favourite. The song opens with an awesome guitar lick and builds nicely with the rhythm section joining in a few measures later. What jumps out at first was a nice laid back tune but with each listen I notice how talented this band really was musically. The drum beat is of the charts original and fits although it seems to work off the timing of the guitar lick. As songwriters Wide Mouth Mason were always solid but couldn't keep the success that made them big. Even after a switch on bass they never were the same again, even though this tune will be on my playlists! Enjoy!!

Mr. T

"Meltdown" - AC/DC

G-Man

"Sad Caper" - Hootie & The Blowfish

Rob

"In Bloom" - Nirvana

Mr. T

"So Lonely" - The Police

G-Man

"Radio" - Alkaline Trio

I love how this song begins out so chill, but once the lyrics begin you realize it's an angry "get out of my life" kinda tune. By the time all breaks loose in the chorus it's already got it's teeth sunken into your skull deep. That's pretty much par for the course for most Alkaline Trio stuff. Catchy punk beats with doom and gloom lyrics. Love it! Love that Matt Skiba might be joining Blink 182 as well!
