As most of you i'm sure have heard the Canadian music world was dealt a huge blow this week when Gord Downie, lead singer of The Tragically Hip, announced that he had terminal brain cancer. On of our contributors, Doug, has been a lifelong Hip fan and felt it was right to honour him this week. Here are some of the Song Of The Day Fridays crew's favourite Tragically Hip songs.

Rob

The Tragically Hip - "The Rules"

Mr. T

The Tragically Hip - "Bobcaygeon"

G-Man

The Tragically Hip - "Morning Moon"

I went with a newer track for my pick. The Hip have always had a knack for great songwriting and Gord's lyrics can always whisk you away to another place in memory or venue. "Morning Moon" is that perfect Spring morning song. Next to a lake. A little cool. Maybe just a couple mosquitoes buzzing about. The rest of the world so far away. Especially you...

The Tragically Hip - "Nautical Disaster"

Ok I picked 2 songs! There is just so much cool stuff to talk about with "Nautical Disaster". The ambiguous lyrics. The fact that there is no chorus. And The Tragically Hip were one of the first Canadian bands to perform on SNL. When Dan Akyroyd hosted back in 1994 he brought along his fellow Kingston Natives and this is the song they performed

Doug

The Tragically Hip - "The Inevitability Of Death"

Dano

The Tragically Hip - "Flamenco"

The Tragically Hip - "Thompson Girl (Live)"

However you choose to leave us Gord, we hope it's on your terms. Thank you for existing.

Rob

Faith No More - "Epic"

Mr. T

Alanis Morrisette - "Ironic"

G-Man

Blackie & The Rodeo Kings - "Lean On Your Peers"

Although I consider this song one from my youth, it rarely played on the radio and Much Music. I did first hear it on Much Music, but it being CanCon i'm sure helped it see one or two more plays. Lead singer Tom Wilson is kind of a chameleon of the Canadian music scene, from Junkhouse to Lee Harvey Osmond to the Rodeo Kings he can transcend almost any music style. "Hamilton punk king swinging to his own disaster..."  always wondered who he was referencing

Doug

Spirit Of The West - "Save This House"

Dano

Black Rebel Motorcycle Club - "Ain't No Easy Way Out"

Rob

The Lumineers - "Ophelia"

Mr. T

George Harrison - "Got My Mind Set On You"

*Note from G-Man: One of my favourite videos of my childhood

G-Man

T-Rex - "Life's A Gas"

I recently spoke with Dano about T-Rex. I've heard that many bands from the 70's and 80's cite them as an influence and they are sometimes viewed as one of Rock's greatest cult bands. I never saw it. I only heard a few songs and didn't really get into them. Even made an effort to dig into their material a little...then I found "Life's A Gas" and I saw...

Soul Asylum - "Black Gold"

Just a great 90's song from a 90's band that doesn't get enough praise.

Doug

Onyx - "Slam!"

De La Soul - "The Magic Number"

Dano

Men At Work - "Land Down Under"

Rush - "A Passage To Bangkok"
