Happy New Year folks!!!

Rob

Eve 6 - "Nightmare"

Mr. T

Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers - "Walls"

G-Man

Gojira - "Flying Whales"

Gotta love bands that start with G! Gotta love metal bands that start with G! I feel like Gojira have been on my radar for a while, but I only gave them an actual listen just recently. Really like what I've heard from them. Concise and melodic, yet brutal and at times unforgiving. "Flying Whales" was where I was recommended to start, so i'll pass it on to you! Happy New Year!

Doug

Taylor Swift - "New Year's Day"

Notorious B.I.G - "Party & Bullshit"

Dano

TBD

Jonny HP

Dishwalla - "Counting Blue Cars"

Mike D

Semisonic - "Closing Time"

I know it's not Christmas themed yet a laid back track i've been wrapping gifts to tonight!

Mr. Tinsle

Bruce Springsteen - "Merry Christmas, Baby"

G-Rinch Man

Trans Siberian Orchestra - "Christmas Canon Rock"

Did a song by these timeless legends last week and thought, might as well wrap up the holiday season the same way! Happy Xmas everyone!

Rob

Foo Fighters - "My Hero"

Mistletoe T

Patricia Vonne - "Santa's On A Rampage"

G in a Manger

Trans Siberian Orchestra - "Christmas Eve/Sarajevo"

It simply is not Christmas until I hear this one. Usually I put off listening to Xmas tunes until the Tree is put up and that typically doesn't happen until early-ish December after my daughter's birthday. Every year though it is definitely worth the wait. Sit back with a nice drink and enjoy it friends!!

Doug

ChoppaDior - "Chocolate Barbie"

Dano

Unleash The Archers - "Awakening"

Jonny Holiday Parade

Nat King Cole - "The Christmas Song"

Mike D Cane

Steve Ouimette - "We Three Kings"

Thursday 9 December 2021

The Fierce Artificer

Rob

Alien Ant Farm - "Sticks & Stones"

Mr. T

TooManyLeftHands - "I Wanna Dance With Somebody"

G-Man

Lenny Kravitz - "Rock n Roll is Dead"

A lesser known 90's hit from fully-dreaded Lenny Kravitz. Has a real 60's,70's chunky feel mixed in with that stylistic 90's flare. When Lenny was on he was damn near unstoppable. Great underrated track right here

Doug

REVE - "CTRL + ALT + DEL"

Dano

Crown Lands - "Big River Road"

Jonny HP

Moxy Fruvos - "King of Spain"

Honourable Mention to Weird Al for a wonderful tune that made me think of this song. Check out his track "King Of Suede"

Mike D

Anya Taylor-Joy - "Downtown"

Barry Ryan - "Eloise"

J.B.

Stone Temple Pilots - "Silvergun Superman"

Thursday 2 December 2021

Parallel Improvement

Rob

Tom Petty - "I Won't Back Down"

Mr. T

Little Steven & The Disciples Of Soul - "Until The Good Is Gone"

G-Man

Modest Mouse - "3rd Planet"

One of the best album openers from the 2000s. Great album start to finish as well!

Doug

Sickick - "I Can Feel It"

Dano

Robert Plant & Alison Krauss - "Quattro (World Drifts In)"

Jonny HP

Korn - "Kick The P.A."

Mike D

Coleman Hell - "Move On"

TBD

Thursday 25 November 2021

Red Dirt, Tejano

Rob

TBD

Mr. T

Chris Stapleton - "Friendship"

G-Man

Lucinda Williams - "Can't Let Go"

Lucinda Williams is a name that's been orbiting around my musical core for sometime but never really absorbed anything by her, until recently. Finally decided to check out her 1998 album Car Wheels on a Gravel Road, which is largely considered to be her finest effort. Though it's a country/bluegrass record it really struck a nerve. I'm getting more accepting in my old age

Doug

Heartland - "I Loved Her First"

Note from G-Man: "Three Country songs in a row?? A Song of the Day first!"

Dano

Rush - "Garden Road (Live)"

Jonny HP

Michael Jackson - "Come Together"

Mike D

Beck - "Cities"

Beck - "Touch The People"

J.B.

Hether - "Oidar"

Thursday 18 November 2021

Tunguska Above and Below

Rob

Incubus - "Promises, Promises"

Mr. T

Shooter Jennings - "Walk Of Life"

G-Man

Staind - "Me"

Staind has definitely gotten a bad rep these days. If they're even still around. Whatever haze has surrounded the band as of late has made people forget about just how fantastically devastating their first 2 albums were. In a time of rap-infused Nu-Metal, Staind's Dysfunction kept the slow crunch of grunge and the blistering, pain-soaked vocals of true metal alive with songs like "Just Go', "Suffocate" and "Mudshovel", but even the deep cuts on the CD were worth a listen. Like the self-immolating "Me"

Doug

The Tragically Hip - "Cordelia"

Dano

Blues Caraceno - "Devil's Got You Beat"

Jonny HP

TBD

Mike D

Dolly Spartans - "I Hear The Dead"

J.B.

Elliott Smith - "Angeles"

For me Elliott Smith was refuge during my early 20's. I find myself neatly packing away his albums thinking, "That's enough for now". But I always return to the well timed, somewhat hollow sound, with lyrics that clearly come from all the insecurities that I know we've all had. Nothing better than to take a deep dive returning to a sound and space you really felt close to. Happy Friday!

Thursday 11 November 2021

The War To End All Wars

Yesterday was Remembrance Day in Canada. Some of the picks were made in honour of those who served or are currently serving. Lest We Forget.

Rob

Three Days Grace - "No More"

Mr. T

Dire Straits - "Brothers In Arms"

Green Pajamas - "Emily Grace"

G-Man

The Pogues - "The Band Played Waltzing Matilda"

Lest We Forget

Doug

The Fray - "She Is"

Dano

Bruce Springsteen - "Mrs McGrath"

Jonny HP

Donovan - "Jennifer Juniper"

Mike D

Terrorbyte - "Hologram"

J.B.

Less Than Jake - "The Science Of Selling Yourself Short"

Thursday 4 November 2021

Twin High Maintenance Machines

Rob

The Tragically Hip - "Something On"

Inspired by G-Man's favourite song from each Hip album list! Great track from Phantom Power!

Mr. T

River Kittens - "Atlantic City"

G-Man

Reef - "Place Your Hands"

Another great song from the 90's that managed to evade my detection! Here I am already 40 years old, still rocking to tracks from the 90's like they were brand new! It's a great way to relive those youthful moments when you're struck by a new song while going about your hacky-sackin' 1990s ways!

Doug

The Tragically Hip - "Vaccination Scar"

Dano

Tom Waits - "Hell Broke Luce"

Jonny HP

Gwar - "Meat Sandwich"/ REDNEX - "Cotton Eye Joe"

You are to play those 2 simultaneously while the ghost of Jim Leahy whips up a shitstorm on Randy's cheeseburger storage gut

Mike D

Meduza - "Tell It To My Heart" feat. Hozier

J.B.

Peter Gabriel - "In Your Eyes"

What better way to start your weekend then with a little PG. Feel free to grab your trench coat, your boom box and blast this baby above your head

Thursday 28 October 2021

Samhain

Yes it is once again the Season of the Witch! So us Fall Children here at Song Of The Day Fridays are bringing you some spooky, creepy and downright haunting Halloween tracks! Enjoy the spirits this year friends and take these chilling tunes with you!

Rawwwwbbb

The Eagles - "Hotel California"

Not everyone's "Go To" Halloween song, but I always get this eerie feeling while listening to it! A rock classic and one HELL of a band!! Happy Halloween gang!!👻💀🎃

Monster T

The Connection - "(It's A) Monster Holiday"

Ghost Man

Metallica - "Of Wolf and Man"

October 28th 2021 was officially Metallica's 40th anniversary! So naturally i've got to give a tip of the hat to my long time lads! This is about as close as they got to a Halloween song, which is odd considering how big of a horror fan lead guitarist Kirk Hammett is. I guess they have covered quite a few Misfits songs. Anyway. I'm going with the S&M version of this song. I feel it got a great treatment with the Orchestra added in and can't go wrong with Jason Newsted on backing vocals.

Doug Up The Bones

The Watchmen - "Boneyard Tree"

Dano no No NO NONONO!! NOOO!!!!

Mastodon - "Halloween"

Jonny H Pumpkins

Fast Romantics - "This Is Why We Fight"

Mike Dead

Das Racist - "Combination Pizza Hut & Taco Bell"

J Beheaded

Bauhaus - "Bela Lugosi's Dead"

Prince - "Bat Dance"

Thursday 21 October 2021

Eleven Thirty Five

Rob

REM - "Driver 8"

Mr. T

Skip Marley - "Life"

G-Man

Concrete Blonde - "Tomorrow, Wendy"

In my ongoing crusade to discover lesser known great tracks from so called "One Hit Wonders" I present to you "Tomorrow, Wendy" by Concrete Blonde. You know "Joey" by this band, but this track crossed my path the other night. Kind of twisted, kind of dark, kind of melancholy, all marvelous. I should write a book with all these songs i'm discovering...

Doug

Fleetwood Mac - "You Make Loving Fun"

Dano

Ghost - "Hunter's Moon"

Jonny HP

Gordon Lightfoot - "Sundown"

Mike D

Halsey - "I Am Not A Woman, I'm A God"

J.B.

Thievery Corporation - "Lebanese Blonde"

Thursday 14 October 2021

Quasimental

Rob

Fall Out Boy - "Thriller"

Mr. T

Bacon Brothers - "Hookers & Blow"

G-Man

Local H - "Fritz's Corner"

I love going back to 90's bands and digging through their back catalog for songs I may have missed. Thats how I discovered this track from Local H. A unique, bi-racial 2 piece grunge act from Zion, Illinois. Not sure if this was a single or not, but to me it sounds like a mix between Nirvana and the Offspring! Love it

Doug

Five For Fighting - "Superman"

Dano

Colm R McGuinness - "Wayfaring Stranger"

Jonny HP

The Fratellis - "Rock N Roll  Will Break Your Heart"

Mike D

Dear Rouge - "Fake Fame"

J.B.

G Tom Mac - "Cry Little Sister"

Alright, alright. You hear this and you think "WTF?". But seriously this guy has epic range, plus he's produced and written a shit ton of hits from many bands that made it to the big time!

Thursday 7 October 2021

Triple U

Rob

Death Cab For Cutie - "Black Sun"

Mr. T

Santana - "Winning"

G-Man

Ween - "Tried & True"

I've been aware of Ween for a long time, but never truly gave their catalogue a fair deep dive. One thing that always impressed me from the songs I did hear, was how vastly different they all were from each other. I could queue up 10 Ween songs and, if you didn't know any better, you would say they were from 10 different artists. That is the case with their album Quebec, one of their more critically acclaim records. I'm excited to get into this, but here's a sample from the start of my Ween journey!

Doug

Weezer - "Enter Sandman"

Dano

Mastodon - "Pushing The Tides"

Jonny HP

TBD

Mike D

Mom Jeans - "Girl Scout Cookies"

J.B.

Wall Of Voodoo - "Mexican Radio"

It had to be done. It's Friday and to celebrate our good friend G-Man's birthday here is a classic. Just like you buddy

Thursday 30 September 2021

Amberbite

Today marks the first day of Truth and Reconciliation in Canada. It will be every September 30th from here on out. A day to reflect and learn about our Indigenous brothers and sisters and the struggles they've endured for generations. #everychildmatters

Rob

Death Cab For Cutie - "Monday Morning"

Mr. T

Little Steven and The Disciples Of Sound - "Until The Good Is Gone"

G-Man

Stone Sour - "Zzyzx Rd"

This song takes me right back to 2006. Right in the thick of it. Fantastic deep track from Corey Taylor's other band Stone Sour.

Link Wray - "Rumble"

In honour of Truth and Reconciliation Day, here is Link Wray with a hit from early in his career. It came out later that he was encouraged to downplay his Native American heritage in order to become successful. Rest easy Link

Doug

Tyler Shaw - "To The Man Who Let Her Go"

Dano

Primus - "Silly Putty"

Jonny HP

Don Henley - "Boys Of Summer"

Mike D

Oh Wonder - "22 Break"

J.B.

Halluci Nation - "R.E.D" feat. Yasiin Bey, Narcy and Black Bear

A little recognition, representation and flavour for the day. Thoughts, gratitude and prayers are with those struggling and those that have

Rob

The Gaslight Anthem - "45"

Mr. T

Paul Butterfield Blues Band - "Love Disease"

G-Man

Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers - "A Thing About You"

This week Rob reminded of an article that highlighted some great deep tracks from super popular bands. This was one of the picks from that list, a new one to me. Can never go wrong with Tom Petty

Doug

Digital Underground - "Same Song" feat. 2Pac

Dano

Angels & Airwaves - "Euphoria"

Jonny HP

Skunk The Squirrel

Rob

Dave Matthews Band - "What You Are"

Mr. T

Chesterfield Kings - "Up And Down"

G-Man

Ghost - "Witch Image"

Back in 2019 I decided I liked Ghost. Everything I heard by them had a distinct hookability with a tinge of aggression and a horror motif. Though I had yet to pick up any of their albums. Until recently. This is a deep track off Prequelle. Just a solid song all around.

Doug

Avicii - "Heaven"

Dano

Valley Of The Sun - "The Hunt"

Jonny HP

Fall Out Boy - "Sugar, We're Going Down"

Mike D

Zara Larrson, MNEK - "Never Forget You"

J.B.

Post Malone - "Circles"

I'm not usually into Post Malone's scene or for the most part of Top 40 (Sure i've got a few guilty pleasures) but this tune definitely hits some feel good vibes for a Friday choice

Thursday 2 September 2021

Cynosure

Rob

Smashing Pumpkins - "Perfect"

Mr. T

Bruce Springsteen - "Living In The Future"

G-Man

Gord Downie - "Vancouver Divorce"

This album has been on my radar for some time. Finally picked up a copy on vinyl while in my hometown this week. Something about GD's voice that is so nostalgic for me. Warm summer nights down by the Waterfront, watching the shadflies soar overhead in search of the lights from Main Street's downtown neon. Getting acquainted with new music and reacquainted with old faves.

Doug

Barenaked Ladies - "What A Good Boy"

Dano

Robert Plant - "Carry Fire"

Jonny HP

TBD

Mike D

The Kiffness - "Alugalug Cat"

J.B.

TBD

Thursday 26 August 2021

Charlie Watts Tentet

 Rob

The Police - "Message In A Bottle"

The Rolling Stones - "Gimme Shelter"

We lost a great musician and drummer. Rarely talked about for how great he was while just being always in the pocket. Never too flashy yet always the backbone to one of Rock and Roll's greatest bands!!

Married. T

Paul Simon - "You Can Call Me Al"

Note from the Group: Congrats to the Newly Weds!!!

The Rolling Stones - "Dead Flowers"

G-Man

Local H - "All The Kids Are Right"

A forgotten great song and video from a forgotten great band.

The Rolling Stones - "Laugh, I Nearly Died"

We've all heard the news about Charlie Watts. An unimagineable career in one of the biggest Rock Bands of all time. Sadly, this is the kind of news we'll be hearing more and more in the next few years. Hold on to these songs. Dive into them. Enjoy the legacies.

Doug

Kaleo - "Way Down We Go"

Dano

The Tea Party - "Black River"

The Rolling Stones - "Rocks Off"

Jonny HP

Boney M - "Rasputin"

The Rolling Stones - "Gimme Shelter"

Mike D

The Rolling Stones - "Paint It Black"

Twisted Metal Black was the pinnacle of gaming when it was released in 2001. And this song as the game was booting up is where I discovered The Rolling Stones, which in turn I then learned my dad is a huge Stones fan. Just being a pup of 8 years old, I would watch my older siblings play. For me this song will forever churn up memories of bonding with my family whether it be my siblings over video games or with my father discovering music.

J.B.

Cage - "Agent Orange"

The Rolling Stones - "Wild Horses"
