Rob Amos The Transparent - "Greater Than Consequence"
Mr. T Dire Straits - "Portobello Belle"
G-Man Goo Goo Dolls - "Sympathy"
John Rzeznik of the Goo Goo Dolls always had a great knack for writing a simple, catchy pop song. Though his accomplishments were largely ignored by mainstream audiences and critics, I always find myself going back to some of the Goo Goo Dolls' lesser known tracks and getting lost.
The era of the music video has come and gone. Born in the 80's and laid to rest in the early 2000's. Sure most songs still get an accompanying video, but they are no longer topics of conversation. Points of interest. Make or break. We here at Song Of The Day Fridays raise our glasses to the era of the music video. We each picked 2 we felt were great. Rob...get us started please
Rob a) Jamiroquai - "Virtual Insanity"
b) Kid n' Play - "Rap Battle"
Mr. T a) David Lee Roth - "Just A Gigolo/Ain't Got Nobody"
b) Mungo Jerry - "In The Summertime"
G-Man a) Queens Of The Stone Age - "Go With The Flow"
Love the monochromatic colour scheme. Love the way the imagery goes with the song. Love the sexual innuendo. Great vid!
b) UNKLE - "Rabbit In Your Headlights" feat. Thom Yorke
Just gonna let the video speak for itself...I couldn't find it on youtube...fuckssakes....so we'll have to go beyond our comfort zone to Vimeo
G-Man Gwar - "Immortal Corruptor"
Say what you will. This is one of my favourite songs and one of the best heavy metal songs ever written. I've got the pleasure to say i've experienced the live Gwar extravaganza and lived to tell about it. About time i've got some metal representation on this blog. Long Live Oderus!
G-Man America - "Sister Golden Hair Surprise"
I'm channeling my inner Mr. T here, but this song will always be one of my favourites. Feels like it was written a thousand years ago, timeless and worthy of reverence. As a guitar player also, it's one of those that demands an attempt at recreating once in a while. Even if you don't recognize the title, once a few bars go by, i'm sure you'll be able to bob your head along with the song.
As Dave Grohl transitioned from his days with Nirvana to the Foo Fighters many thought it was too soon! Their self titled album(or Dave Grohl's solo album) rocked with high energy and great to sing melodies! Then "The Colour and the Shape" came out in 1997 with a strong list of great tracks, one and only "Everlong" put this group in a different league then the rest. As the group added members the sound filled itself out, with The Foo Fighters writing more high octane tunes now mixed with some ballads they were on there way to something great. As always G-Man and I agree that Everlong is the quintessential rock tune from the 90's. Hope you enjoy!
Incubus - "Glass"
On a 1997 late summer day I can still remember sifting through piles of cd's at cd warehouse. I came across the album "Science" by Incubus. I had heard some of their stuff off of "Fungus Amongus" but really got hooked once I bought Science. "Glass" wasn't a huge commercial hit for the group but is a song which I find blends their sound from then to now. Unlike most groups Incubus started off heavy and melodic and stayed true to their style for over 20 years! This tune really shows their ability to stay true to the Incubus sound. I hope you enjoy!
Mr. T Sheepdogs - "Downtown"
G-Man Flogging Molly - "If I Ever Leave This World Alive"
It's funny how a song means one thing to you before a life changing event and then after a similar event it puts the listening experience in a completely different perspective. This was once a leaving town song...now it's something else.
