Still discovering great "new-to-me" gems from the batch of CDs gifted to me by one Jonny HP. I knew i'd find some good stuff on the Murder By Death albums I never absorbed.
From maybe the Pumpkins' best album, this one took a while for me to appreciate. But once it took it's hold, it's like being wrapped in a warm blanket of guitar fuzz and wall of sound distortion. Enjoy
This album has been on my radar for some time. Finally picked up a copy on vinyl while in my hometown this week. Something about GD's voice that is so nostalgic for me. Warm summer nights down by the Waterfront, watching the shadflies soar overhead in search of the lights from Main Street's downtown neon. Getting acquainted with new music and reacquainted with old faves.
When I was younger I got picked on quite a bit. One of the main culprits often wore a Helmet T-shirt. The one with the alien shaking the guy's hand? For this sole reason I really never gave the band that much of a chance. Sure I knew a couple tracks, "Unsung" and their cover of "Army Of Me", but anytime I heard a song by them or heard their name, it brought back unpleasant memories. Sometimes you just gotta say enough is enough and stare that fucker straight in the eye. I've been warming up to Helmet lately, which is great because they are the type of dysfunctional, heavy and frigged up music that I could've used for the past 20 years. Thankfully as I get older, the music stays the same.

STRFKR - "Golden Light"
So many good things seem to spawn from Portland. STRFKR is another one of those mutant things. They aren't just another indie rock band, wait, well they are but more in the realm of synth/indie/dance with a wide range of focus and talent. Starting originally as a solo project the group has expanded and so has their album line up since 2007. This track is a gem, turn it on, head out for a drive and turn it up. Chill vibes and easy days...bet you'll start nodding your head in a sleepy daze.

G-Man Snot - "Snot"
We should really do a theme week about band names and song names being the same thing. Snot was a hardcore-punk group that infused themes of reggae, ska, and metal. While ahead of their time, they were short lived as lead singer Lynn Strait was killed in a car accident in 1998.

Discovered this one while going through old Punk compilations from the late 90's. I know this doesn't seem punk, but punk musicians always have a soft side. The lyrics to this one could have been written by a 18 year old me.
