Weekend Of Glass

Mr. T

Bob Dylan - "Positively 4th Street"

G-Man

Live - "Lightning Crashes"

Man, when this song was big it was everywhere. I'm pretty sure it was track 5 or 6 on one of my very first Mixed Tapes that I would make. "The Best Of The 90's". A tape I made in 1997, before the 90s were even sorted out. I saw the music video the other day, on some channel that still plays videos and it just captivated me again. Like hearing the song and seeing the video for the first time. It's when those feelings and emotions get prodded is one of the reasons why we enjoy music in the first place

Doug

Van Morrison - "Into The Mystic"

Dano

TBD

Jonny HP

Gang Of Youths - "Do Not Let Your Spirit Wane"

Mike D

Taylor Swift - "Our Song"

J.B.

Mother Sun - "Marbles"

Auxillium

Mr. T

Patoranking - "Abule"

G-Man

Slipknot - "Adderall"

The new Slipknot album has potential. Can't wait to pick it up. This is the lead off track and it may not be the sound that you were expecting to hear. Gotta respect a band that does things their own way. Slipknot has always been like that

Doug

Raekwon - "Guillotine (Swords)"

Dano

King Buffalo - "Ecliptic"

King Buffalo - "Burning"

That instrumental needs another with it.

Jonny HP

Brand New - "Jesus"

Mike D

Flat Moon Theory - "See Me As I Am"

J.B.

TBD

Cryoseism

Rob

Better Than Ezra - "In The Blood"

Mr. T

Marc Ribler - "This Is How The Song Goes"

G-Man

Queens Of The Stone Age - "In The Fade"

You may not know his name but i'm sure you've heard Mark Lanegan's music. Lead singer of The Screaming Trees, founding member of Queens Of The Stone Age, a series of albums with Isobel Campbell of Belle & Sebastien, and of course, a prolific solo career. He passed away this week at the young age of 57. If you're into some dark, but well written music, give his catalog a listen. RIP Mark

Doug

Sam Hunt - "Breaking Up Was Easy In The 90's"

Dano

Isobel Campbell & Mark Lanegan - "Revolver"

These were the hardest picks without going with 12 of his tracks. The evil and the pretty in equal parts. That was Mark Lanegan

Isobel Campbell & Mark Lanegan - "Honey Child What Can I Do"

Jonny HP

TBD

Mike D

Muse - "Stockholm Syndrome"

As a tribute to one of the first songs I heard from them back in the Guitar Hero 3 Days

J.B.

Shakey Graves - "Late July"

Agelast

 Rob

Fallout Boy - "Bang The Doldrums"

Eve 6 - "Nocturnal"

Mr. T

Led Zeppelin - "Baby Come On Home"

G-Man

Wilco - "California Stars"

I know it's the dead of Winter. And I mean DEAD. But I had to go with this one after I heard it on my morning commute this morning. One of my favourite Summer time chill songs. After the darkness comes the light. Warm sun on your face. Cool drink in your hand. Soon, right?

No Doubt - "Simple Kind Of Life"

This was going to be my pick before I heard the Wilco one this morning, but still thought I should give this one it's moment. Totally forgot about this track until I saw the video last night. Nothing's tougher for a band than trying to follow up a smash album. For No Doubt 1996's Tragic Kingdom made them (and singer Gwen Stefani) overnight sensations. It took them 4 years to come out with their next album Return Of Saturn. I always enjoyed it and thought it didn't get enough respect. I think this song gets forgotten, but it's a well written, well crafted alt-rock song. One of No Doubt's best.

Note From Rob: "Talk about a rod-stiffener"

Doug

Headstones - "Heart Of Darkness"

Dano

The Secret Sisters - "Mississippi"

The Secret Sisters - "He's Fine"

Jonny HP

Lana Del Rey - "Gods & Monsters"

Mike D

Loon Choir - "Full World"

J.B.

Le Tigre - "Deceptacon"

Electronic Dance Punk anyone? Le Tigre was a late 90s mindchild by the leftwing sociopolitical Kathleen Hanna (See Bikini Kill). I've heard this song covered by some pretty awesome front ladies over the years and even a high school garage band which was honestly epic. If you haven't heard it, it'll definitely help your Friday morning!

Komorebi

Rob

TBD

Mr. T

The Manhattans - "Shining Star"

G-Man

Goldfinger - "Mable"

Pure, unadulterated 90's punk. With a dash of ska sprinkled on top. Mabel was an important name to me and some friends during my High School daze. So this song is the perfect time capsule of those younger selves.

Doug

Flight Of The Conchords - "Business Time"

Dano

Colm McGuinness - "Jenny Of Oldstones"

Jonny HP

The Fratellis - "Whistle For The Choir"

Mike D

Seven Lions - "Don't Leave" feat. Ellie Goulding

J.B.

Alpha - "Firefly (Receiver Mix)"

Well, I had a few great tracks lined up for today but this one spoke to me. For a long time I knew this one as Portishead "Music To Fuck To", and though Portishead has a ton of amazing tracks for, uh, extracurricular times, the track was actually one of those mislabeled during the Napster/Kazaa days of the early 2000s. The song still pleases all sorts of parts for your Friday and can set the tone for anyone's romantic or non-romantic evening. Maybe it's a happy F*ck Friday track?

Note from G-Man: I Thought it was Portishead too!!

Overmorrow

Rob

Coheed & Cambria - "Young Love"

Every once in a while you get the opportunity to hear a new and exciting band. I've featured alot of Coheed lately and G-Man and I even recorded our very own Balcony Boyz "Coheed Edition"!! So amazing and as always, Enjoy! www.thevoid-radio.com

Mr. T

T.Rex - "Thunderwing"

G-Man

Punch Brothers - "Julep"

I don't really know much about these guys, but I saw this video come up on my Youtube suggestions and felt like i've seen this album cover a bunch in my past. The song is an instant favourite and hopefully other songs by these guys will hold up as well

Doug

Sam Smith - "Time After Time"

Dano

Crooked Sill - "New Railroad"

Jonny HP

TBD

Mike D

Daft Punk - "Aerodynamic"

J.B.

Vacations - "Relax"

Unbeing Dead

Rob

Jimmy Eat World - "Polaris"

Mr. T

Juanes - "Dancing In The Dark"

G-Man

Morphine - "Honey White"

Some day i'll dive into the fascinating, mysterious and ultimately tragic tale of Morphine. A band from the 90's lightyears ahead of their time, yet somehow came along 40 years too late as well. "Honey White" has an instantly recognizable hook, familiar yet unplaceable.

Doug

Amos Lee - "Keep It Loose, Keep It Tight"

Dano

Crooked Still - "Railroad Bill"

Jonny HP

Mother Mother - "Hayloft"

Mike D

Judas Priestess - "The Hellion / Electric Eye"

J.B.

The Doobie Brothers - "What A Fool Believes"

Come on now, The Doobz always have a good place for a Friday. Put pm your mask, get outside and I dare ya to go for a walk to this. The world will feel all sorts of right

Jonny HP

Between The Desert and Air

Rob

Smashing Pumpkins - "Cherub Rock"

Mr. T

TBD

G-Man

Rocky Votolato - "Mixtapes/Cellmates"

Discovered this one while going through old Punk compilations from the late 90's. I know this doesn't seem punk, but punk musicians always have a soft side. The lyrics to this one could have been written by a 18 year old me.

Doug

Peter Elkas - "Fall Apart Again"

Dano

Blues Saraceno - "Grave Digger"

Jonny HP

Metallica - "Some Kind Of Monster"

Monsters Fear The Welcome & Warm

Rob

Chevelle - "The Red"

Mr. T

Otis Taylor - "Ten Million Slaves"

G-Man

The Fall Of Troy - "F.C.P.R.E.M.I.X"

I fookin' love when the lead singer also shreds on guitar in a band. Such is the case with Fall Of Troy. I love the part that starts around the 3 minute mark, especially the bass pulls. One of my all time faves.

Doug

Spirit Of The West - "Home For A Rest"

Dano

Green Lung - "Lady Lucifer"

Jonny HP

Gwar - "Immortal Corruptor"

Note from G-Man: Holy Fuck Yes It All

The Sky Was The Colour Of Television, Tuned To A Dead Channel

Rob

Brass Against The Machine - "Wake Up"

Mr. T

Trooper - "Round Round We Go"

G-Man

This Bike Is A Pipe Bomb - "Depression"

Perusing someone's album collection is a great and favourite way of mine to learn about new artists. I follow Laura Jane Grace on Twitter and every now and then she'll simply tweet about an album that she's rockin' or spinning at the moment. Most often than not i'll snag a listen to it as well, that's how I discovered This Is Bike Is A Pipe Bomb.

This Bike Is A Pipe Bomb - "This Is What I Want"

Doug

Manuel Costa - "Hey There Delilah" feat. May & June

Dano

Mark Lanegan Band - "St Louis Elegy"

Mark Lanegan Band - "Harborview Hospital"

The Long Weekend Begins With A Shortcoming...

Rob

Billy Ocean - "Get Outta My Dreams, Get Into My Car"

Mr. T

KC & The Sunshine Band - "Give It Up!"

G-Man

Billy Joel - "The Downeaster Alexa"

Billy Joel has always been a old favourite fallback of mine. When I have kids, especially a son, I will use the words of Mr. Joel to teach him some serious life lessons. It's one thing I admire about Joel is his lyrics are always interesting and never lazy, often changing the words of the chorus each time through. This song is a lesser known track, but it showcases his talents wonderfully. It's a lament about the plight of the Long Island Fishermen, an industry close to Joel's heart, but one that has faded from relevance

Doug

Nas - "Adam & Eve"

Dano

Robert Plant - "Shine It All Around"

Jonny HP

Rise Against - "3 Day Weekend"

Thursday, 21 June 2018

Lycanthropy at First Note's Sound

Rob

Dave Matthews Band - "Samurai Cop (Oh Joy Begin)"

Mr. T

Glenn Frey - "You Belong To The City"

G-Man

Snow - "Plumb Song"

Mind On The Moon was kind of a comeback album for Toronto reggae master Snow. Though he has had several albums since his debut in 1993, this was the first album with singles that broke through to the charts. In my opinion it was ahead of it's time. This song is tough to describe. The reaction people have to it is fair in their own way. Take a listen and decide for yourself and remember that this was released in the year 2000

Doug

Gorillaz - "Humility"

I didn't know what to pick this week and I found what I think is the new Gorillaz so it got the call

Dano

Twenty One Pilots - "Lane Boy"

Jonny HP

Trapt - "Headstrong"

A Cool Midsummer Breeze; Wanting Songs Of Pain To Ease

Rob

Death Cab For Cutie - "Cath"

Mr. T

Pete Wingfield - "Eighteen With A Bullet"

G-Man

Something Corporate - "Punk Rock Princess"

Been recently going through some killer tracks from my youth. There was a time when I considered this edgy and punk. Now I just consider it a reminder of simpler, wonderful times. Still a fantastic track.

Doug

Prince - "Little Red Corvette"

If Prince were still alive, today would be his 60th birthday. RIP

Dano

Death Angel - "Dream Calls For Blood"

Jonny HP

Depeche Mode - "Wrong"

Music For The Vesper

Rob

Incubus - "Nice To Know You"

Mr. T

Rihanna - "Cheers (Drink To That)"

Boston - "Foreplay/Long Time"

G-Man

Boston - "Peace Of Mind"

This song can stop me in my tracks. Mr. T and I got to talking about Boston after we made our picks. The self-titled album by Boston is not only one of the best ever, but perhaps the best ever debut album. Who else ya got? "Peace Of Mind" is a rocking good track, but can also mellow me out. Just what i'm looking forward to for the long weekend

Doug

Aloe Blacc - "Make Way"

Dano

The Darkness - "Get Your Hands Off My Woman"

The Darkness - "Black Shuck"

These songs need each other

Jonny HP

Grandson - "Blood // Water"

Let The Rain Become A Rhythm

Yes it's Friday the 13th, but we here at Song Of The Day make our own luck! Let's see if any of the lads are feeling superstitious as they still drop 2 picks on us in April!

Rob

At The Drive-In - "Pattern Against User"

At The Drive-In - "Cosmonaut"

Mr. T

Bruce Springsteen - "Jungleland"

Bruce Springsteen - "Blinded By The Light"

G-Man

New Found Glory - "My Friends Over You"

This one has a great video. It looks like they're legitamitely having fun in the video, which is what it should all be about. New Found Glory are a great pop-punk/emo group from the 2000's that always had that underground coolness factor, but never reached super mainstream status

New Found Glory - "It's Not Your Fault"

Purists gave this song a hard time, but to me it's a high point for New Found Glory. Insightful, mature and still holds on to their pop-punk sensibilities. Delightful

Doug

Liz Phair - "Why Can't I?"

Liz Phair - "Fuck & Run"

Dano

Clutch - "Big News I & II"

Jonny HP

Houndsmouth - "Sedona"

Houndsmouth - "For No One"
