Phosphorescence

Mr. T

Elvis Costello - "I Can't Stand Up For Falling Down"

G-Man

CKY - "Close Yet Far"

A few weeks ago I picked a CKY track after kind of discovering how cool they were. Well here's another one from Camp Kill Yourself, just because i'm not done with them yet

Doug

The Regrettes - "Monday"

Dano

Battle Tapes - "Belgrade"

Jonny HP

Korn - "Clown"

Wolvish-Ravening Lamb

Mr. T

The Dollyrots - "Night Owl"

Billy Idol - "White Wedding"

For my Grandma's 90th birthday on Saturday!

G-Man

33 - "Rich Happy"

I've been searching for this song since 1997....I saw the video one Summer's day watching Much Music and it was featured in the Indie Spotlight. The chorus has been an earworm for me this whole time. 26 years i've been on my quest, was starting to think it was a dream. Finally, it appears the director of the video posts it to Youtube and one of my occasional, yearly google searches comes back with one positive result. Never give up kids.

Doug

The Eurythmics - "Here Comes The Rain Again"

Dano

Chris Cornell - "Dead Wishes"

Jonny HP

Korn - "I'm Hiding"

Catch 44

Mr. T

Willie Nelson - "On The Road Again"

G-Man

Janet Jackson - "Together Again"

This song has seen something of a resurgence lately. not sure why. In my youth I always assumed this was about a couple that broke up. Now hearing it again with more grey in my beard, it seems to be about the loss or death of a loved one. Maybe a child? Hits you differently once you become a parent

Doug

Billy Joel - "Movin' Out (Anthony's Song)"

Dano

Missy Elliott - "Work It"

Jonny HP

Korn - "My Gift To You"

Mike D

Down With Webster - "One In A Million"

J.B.

Stardust - "The Music Sounds Better With You"

Invincible Summer

Mr. T

Jennifer Warnes - "Somebody Somewhere"

G-Man

Against Me! - "Tonight We're Gonna Give It 35%"

As pure an honest as Against Me!'s songs normally are, this one is about as bareboned honest it gets. A b-side to one of their earliest singles, the turmoil singer/songwriter Laura Jane Grace dealt with most of her life is bubbling under the surface of this one. Completely stunned me the first time I heard it. Just an absolute banger.

Doug

Whitney Houston & Clean Bandit - "How Will I Know"

Dano

Bad Religion - "You Are (The Government)"

Bad Religion - "Do What You Want"

Short songs get a partnet

Jonny HP

Korn - "Get Up" feat Skrillex

Mike D

Black Eyed Peas - "Meet Me Halfway"

J.B.

Ayano Tsuji - "Kaze ni Naru"

Tom Petty - "I Won't Back Down"

Mr. T

Little Steven & The Disciples Of Soul - "Until The Good Is Gone"

G-Man

Modest Mouse - "3rd Planet"

One of the best album openers from the 2000s. Great album start to finish as well!

Doug

Sickick - "I Can Feel It"

Dano

Robert Plant & Alison Krauss - "Quattro (World Drifts In)"

Jonny HP

Korn - "Kick The P.A."

What was your first concert?

It's theme week here at Song Of The Day Fridays!! Since the lot of us here are lifelong music lovers, Mr. T had the idea that we should all pick a song from the first band we ever saw in concert! A fun little trip down memory lane and a glimpse into the histories of the SOTDF members! Bring back live music!!! Rob, start us off!

Rob

The Tragically Hips - "Poets"

First concert I attended...Canada's The Tragically Hip. It was a rainy day and my step sister had tickets with her friend. Woke up that morning to a crazy rainstorm and I overheard her mentioning that her friend had backed out on account of the rain. Right after she asked me "Want to see a band today?" I wasn't really into a specific type of music at the time but I listened to a variety of different artists and styles. I said "yes" but had no idea the magnitude this group would have in Canada and even up until their very last show they were always spectacular! This concert has shaped my musical influences ever since!!

Mr. T

The Who - "Baba O'Riley"

The first band I saw live was a big one...

G-Man

Moist - "Ophelia"

I'm kinda cheating here. The first actual concert I saw was Weird Al Yankovic, and while I don't think that's anything to be ashamed of, it was before I was even a fan of music and went with friends based on entertainment alone. Growing up in North Bay, we didn't get alot of bands stopping by on tour. We'd have a few classic rock groups come to our Summer Heritage Festival, but I mainly played in the grass while those bands were performing and can't even remember what the first one was. Flashforward to 1996 when i'm starting my CD collection. Wearing music shirts. Watching Much Music. I hear Moist is coming to town. Ask my mom to buy me a ticket and score one in the front row of the Capitol Centre. No opening band. Just them. David Usher throws water in my face and I catch a guitar pick. Great times.

Doug

Collective Soul - "Shine"

In the early 90's friends and I went to Landsdowne to see Aerosmith. Collective Soul opened for them and it was a great show!

Dano

The Blackwater Fever - "Back For You"

Jonny HP

Korn - "Shot Liver Medley"

Fuck, my first concert was Korn.....Family Values '98

Mike D

Backstreet Boys - "Shape Of My Heart"

Black & Blue tour...

J.B.

Treble Charger - "Ever She Flows"

Ok, ok, I get it. Some of you might think that's no comparison to seeing Moist or like my father in law seeing The Doors before they were even famous kinda shit. But honestly, start flipping through TC's repetoire and they have more than an extensive banger listing. It was an amazing show and my first shot at crowd surfing which I often fade back to and wish I could back up there one more time

The End Of A Beginning

We took a week off for Christmas and now we're back with the New Years Edition of Song Of The Day Fridays!! Some of the guys are picking their favourite song from 2020, others are letting the dawn of a new year inspire their track, others are just giving 2020 a big ol' middle finger through song! There are no rules and that's how we like it! Rob's up first!!

Retrospective Rob

Jimmy Eat World - "Appreciation"

While everyone has their own thoughts and experiences through 2020, i'm gonna reflect on the positives. It's had it's ups and downs, but while looking back this has really been about searching within, while still facing so many new challenges. If you could rewind 2020 what would you do differently? My goals  = Live and Learn! Happy New Years!

Mr. Times Square

The Eagles - "Funky New Year"

G-Man's Rockin' New Years Eve

Enuff Z'Nuff - "New Thing"

One of the best songs I heard this year and no it's not a 2020 track. This one might be a surprise to some of you. Yes on the surface it doesn't immediately identify as a G-Man pick. The hair metal aesthetic of the band and even the band's name sounds like it should be printed in the bright oranges, pinks and yellows of early 90's cheese. Ordinarily, I probably wouldn't have given it a second listen, but with it being 2020 and all it's lockdown malaise...i actually found myself intrigued by this track. It's hair metaly but it isn't. It's New Agey but it isn't. It's glam but it isn't. What it is is catchy, different and uplifting. If it was released any other time but the early Nineties, we probably would have heard more from these guys

Doug-cember 31st

Taylor Swift - "New Year's Day"

Dano

Andrew WK - "Party Hard"

January HP

Korn - "Throw Me Away"

Midnight Mike D

Semisonic - "Closing Time"

J. Bubbly

Bloodhound Gang - "Fire. Water. Burn"

So since this year was such a dumpster fire in many ways, let's commemorate it with my selection. I could have gone a darker route with "Lift Your Head Up High" but hey, there were some good things. Right? Maybe? Happy New Years all and let's burn this fucker to the ground and start fresh!

The Low End Fat

On today's blog the boys look at songs where the Bass is the main instrument. The one steering the ship. The one driving the tune! A musical theme brought to us by our longtime member Mr. T! As always, Rob gets us started...

Rob

Nirvana - "Lounge Act"

Jamiroquai - "(Don't) Give Hate A Chance"

Mr. T

The Rolling Stones - "Emotional Rescue"

G-Man

Rancid - "Journey To The End Of East Bay"

I struggled with this one a bit. Landed on this Rancid tune, but even though it has a killer bass riff by the legendary Matt Friedman, wasn't sure if it really drove the song...

Jaco Pastorius - "Come On, Come Over"

Then I remembered about this beauty! Jaco is like the Hendrix to many bass players. A diety in the field. A virtuoso and a visionary. Taken too soon, like so many young legends

Doug

Paul McCartney & Wings - "Silly Love Songs"

Dano

Les Claypool & The Holy Mackarel - "The Awakening"

Feist - "Sea Lion Woman" (Chromeo Remix)

Jonny HP

Korn - "Dead Bodies Everywhere"

Mike D

Sixx AM - "Life Is Beautiful"

Rocktober Part 2: Infamy

Rob

Red Hot Chili Peppers - "Road Trippin'"

Mr. T

Stars on 54  - "If You Could Read My Mind"

G-Man

Coheed & Cambria - "The Afterman"

I Know this one isn't the embodiment of Rocktober, but it always reminds me of Autumn. Released during a tumultuous time in my life, but it's a welcome track to remind me of where I came from. Coheed is consistently consistent

KoRn - "No Place To Hide"

Just jizzin' and fuckin it up wit some hoes and shit

Doug

Flogging Molly - "Devil's Dance Floor"

Dano

Danko Jones - "Play The Blues"

The Living End - "Roll On"

Start At The Middle and Expand

Rob

Our Lady Peace - "Julia"

Mr. T

Styx - "Too Much Time On My Hands"

Little River Band - "Lonesome Loser"

G-Man

Silverchair - "Emotion Sickness"

Track 1 on the oft overlooked Neon Ballroom. It hits hard and comes out of the gate unexpectedly. Shows their maturity as songwriters, but this album and the constant touring also marked the beginning of Silverchair's slide into obscurity. Which is a shame. Tonnes of great stuff on this album

Doug

A-Ha - "Take On Me" (Live)

Dano

Shred Kelly - "Jupiter"

Jonny HP

Korn - "A Different World feat. Cory Taylor"

Thursday, 16 November 2017

Songs in Technocolour

Rob

Three Days Grace - "Chalk Outline"

Mr. T

Boz Scaggs - "Lowdown"

G-Man

Laura Jane Grace - "Random Hearts" (Tom Gabel)

Track one on her first solo album Heart Burns. Perfect feel for a track one. Knew the album was going to be something good from the early moments. Against Me's lead singer and main songwriter FYI.

Doug

MSTRKRFT - "Bounce" feat. N.O.R.E & ISIS

I tried to think what songs I have listened to this week and this was the only one. I don't mean I have been listening to it constantly, I mean I have only listened to one song this week. Song of the week is tough.

Dano

MIA - "Bring The Noize"

Jonny HP

Korn - "Good God"

Thursday, 21 September 2017

Autumn Songs for Falling Hearts...

Rob

Sparta - "Vacant Skies" (Austere EP)

Mr. T

Bruce Cockburn - "If A Tree Falls"

G-Man

James - "Laid"

No real rhyme or reason behind my TWO picks this week...just some great music that came rolling through my ears these past few days

Alter Bridge - "Metalingus"

Doug

Eminem - "Rock Bottom"

Dano

Dead Sara - "Weatherman"

Jonny HP

Korn - "Good God"
