Quiescent

Mr. T

Brenda Lee - "Some Of These Days"

G-Man

Jets To Brazil - "Sweet Avenue"

This one came on while I was at the gym today. I knew there was a reason it always gets included on my big playlists. Totally clicked with me today. Though not a pump-you-up gym tune, one that I can definitely go back to anytime now!

Doug

Joyner Lucas & Logic - "ISIS (ADHD)

Dano

The Pack AD - "Yes I Know"

Jonny HP

The Tragically Hip - "Born In The Water"

Fun fact: I may have broke my ankle today. To celebrate that: "Born In The Water" by The Hip. Because i'm in the Sault.

Mike D

Gary Jules - "Mad World"

J.B.

Plastic Bertrand - "Ca Plane Pour Moi"

Je suis a France maintenant. C'est ne pas "plane pour moi"...bon fin de semaine!

Eyes Open Tight

Mr. T

Dustin Lynch - "Tequila On A Boat"

G-Man

Gin Blossoms - "'Til I Hear It From You"

I always get a little sad when I hear the Gin Blossoms. They're great, but the price they paid to make it always casts a bit of a shadow over their career. Once Doug Hopkins' songs ran dry, they kind of faded away, this was one of their last big hits.

Doug

The Dan Band - "Total Eclipse Of The Heart"

Dano

Rage Against The Machine - "Vietnow"

Jonny HP

Better Than Ezra - "Desperately Wanting"

Mike D

Letters To Cleo - "Here and Now"

J.B.

Bouncing Souls - "True Believers"

Return Trip

 Mr. T

Ricky Byrd - "Glamdemic Blues"

G-Man

The Smashing Pumpkins - "Mayonaise"

From maybe the Pumpkins' best album, this one took a while for me to appreciate. But once it took it's hold, it's like being wrapped in a warm blanket of guitar fuzz and wall of sound distortion. Enjoy

Doug

Dave Matthews - "Gravedigger"

Dano

Crown Lands - "White Buffalo"

Jonny HP

Christina Aguilera - "Dirrty"

Mike D

Braden Bales - "Chronically Cautious"

J.B.

The Smashing Pumpkins - "To Sheila"

Broken Open

 Mr. T

Lutan Fyah - "Game Is Over"

G-Man

The New Pornographers - "Whiteout Conditions"

I feel like even i've been sleeping on these guys and I own some of their albums. They never cease to amaze me with their "so-simple-why-didn't-I-think-of-it?" songwriting that just has this long lasting indelible quality. Basically I recommend everything and anything these guys do. Should be a truly proper Canadian Musical export.

Doug

The Tragically Hip - "New Orleans Is Sinking" (Live in Kingston)

New live album comes out tomorrow!!!

Dano

Jordan Klassen - "Niko"

Jonny HP

TBD

Mike D

Banx  & Ranx, Reve - "Headphones"

Kill Half The Night

 Mr. T

Bob Seger & The Silver Bullet Band - "Brave Strangers"

G-Man

The Offspring - "Spare Me The Details"

Continuing with my scouring of deep tracks from big time 90's/2000's bands. This one comes from The Offspring's 2003 album Splinter. Which I think was originally going to be titled Chinese Democrazy: You Snooze You Lose. Love it

Doug

Sam Cooke - "A Change Is Gonna Come"

Dano

Nym - "Shortlife"

Jonny HP

Murder By Death - "I Came Around"

Mike D

Post Malone - "Chip N Dale Rescue Rangers Theme"

Tony K - "3s"

J.B.

Unwritten Law - "She Says"

Soft Sun

 Mr. T

Mike Campbell & The Dirty Knobs - "Electric Gypsy"

G-Man

Boysetsfire - "My Life In The Knife Trade"

It was a gorgeous day today and this one came on during my morning commute. It may not seem like a song that would remind someone of the blissful Summer days of years gone by, but it does for me. I first heard it on a mixed CD given to me in the Summer of 2004. Really opened a world of music to me. That Summer I remember it being so long and hot. So much less worry.

Doug

Macklemore & Ryan Lewis - "Downtown"

Dano

Primus - "John The Fisherman"

Note From G-Man: "Kirk Hammett at 11 seconds in!"

Jonny HP

Belle & Sebastian - "Piazza, New York Catcher"

Mike D

TBD

J.B.

Eels - "Mr. E's Beautiful Blues"

It's Friday! When you're heading home or heading out on a Road Trip this tune will definitely leave you satisfied!

What Ever Happened To....?

Happy Easter! and since it's the long weekend, we here at Song Of The Day thought we'd bring you one of our much revered theme weeks! This week's theme is "What Ever Happened To?" And since it was suggested by our very own Mr. T....he get's to go first!

Mr. T

Nelly Furtado - "I'm Like A Bird"

Mr. T: "What Happened To Her?"

G-Man: "I Think she is basically being a mom now"

Mr. T: "That's a full time gig! I wouldn't know but Blondie has to take care of me and apparently that's not easy"

G-Man: "Haha, I remember what happened when you tried to dress yourself that one time..."

Mr. T: "We all have skills in life...but not all the skills..."

G-Man

Live - "Turn My Head"

I know these guys signed a huge record contract after or just before Throwing Copper. That can go one of two ways for a band, a successful career with longevity or fading into obscurity. However, my theory is that their name also did them in, especially in the internet era. Searching for Live or Live Band or Live Music or Live songs....you'd need to be very specific with your searches and let's face, most internet users just ain't it

Doug

Nina Simone - "Feeling Good"

What happened, Miss Simone?

Dano

Cake - "Long Line Of Cars"

Jonny HP

Mondo Cozmo - "Tonight Tonight"

Mike D

3Oh!3 - "Don't Trust Me"

J.B.

t.A.T.u - "All The Things She Said"

Whatever happened to Tatu? This song (and video) caused a pretty massive stir in the early 2000s....

Lust Capsule

Rob

TBD

Mr. T

Nelly Furtado - "Parking Lot"

G-Man

Goo Goo Dolls - "Black Balloon"

Always been a fan of John Rzeznik's writing skills. Some of the best and most indelible 90's alt-rock songs came from the Goo Goo Dolls. This was the fourth, I think, single from Dizzy Up The Girl, but I also enjoyed it the most. Listening to it again after all these years, really see it in a different light. 20 plus years, faded away so fast

Doug

Onyx - "Slam"

Dano

The Wailin' Jennys - "The Devil's Paintbrush Road"

Jonny HP

Plague Vendor - "Locomotive"

Mike D

The Halluci Nation - "Land Back" feat. The Beat & A Northern Voice

J.B.

Alfa Mist - "Mind The Gap" feat. Lex Amor

If you're looking for some Acid Jazz escapes, definitely check out Alfa Mist. Actually, even if you aren't an Acid Jazz aficiando, fear not. There is a place for you here.

Red Heaven

Happy New Year folks!!!

Rob

Eve 6 - "Nightmare"

Mr. T

Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers - "Walls"

G-Man

Gojira - "Flying Whales"

Gotta love bands that start with G! Gotta love metal bands that start with G! I feel like Gojira have been on my radar for a while, but I only gave them an actual listen just recently. Really like what I've heard from them. Concise and melodic, yet brutal and at times unforgiving. "Flying Whales" was where I was recommended to start, so i'll pass it on to you! Happy New Year!

Doug

Taylor Swift - "New Year's Day"

Notorious B.I.G - "Party & Bullshit"

Dano

TBD

Jonny HP

Dishwalla - "Counting Blue Cars"

Mike D

Semisonic - "Closing Time"

Twenty-One Pilots - "Stressed Out"

J.B.

Teddybears STHLM - "Yours To Keep"

Well, thought i'd dig deep for some non-rager fueled vibes for your New Years Eve since the world is still a little bit on fire. Have a great one and we'll see you next year!

Rob

The Gaslight Anthem - "45"

Mr. T

Paul Butterfield Blues Band - "Love Disease"

G-Man

Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers - "A Thing About You"

This week Rob reminded of an article that highlighted some great deep tracks from super popular bands. This was one of the picks from that list, a new one to me. Can never go wrong with Tom Petty

Doug

Digital Underground - "Same Song" feat. 2Pac

Dano

Angels & Airwaves - "Euphoria"

Jonny HP

Des Rocs - "Hanging By A Thread"

Mike D

The National Parks - "Chance"

Upside Down O

 Rob

Smashing Pumpkins - "Tonight, Tonight"

Note From G-Man: "Great way to kick us off"

Mr. T

Stephen Marley - "Traffic Jam"

G-Man

Helmet - "In The Meantime"

When I was younger I got picked on quite a bit. One of the main culprits often wore a Helmet T-shirt. The one with the alien shaking the guy's hand? For this sole reason I really never gave the band that much of a chance. Sure I knew a couple tracks, "Unsung" and their cover of "Army Of Me", but anytime I heard a song by them or heard their name, it brought back unpleasant memories. Sometimes you just gotta say enough is enough and stare that fucker straight in the eye. I've been warming up to Helmet lately, which is great because they are the type of dysfunctional, heavy and frigged up music that I could've used for the past 20 years. Thankfully as I get older, the music stays the same.

Doug

Rascal Flatts - "Bless The Broken Road"

Dano

The Dead Tongues - "Wild Perfume"

Jonny HP

The Arcade Fire - "Rebellion (Lies)"

Mike D

Band Of Horses - "The Funeral"

J.B.

McLusky - "To Hell With Good Intentions"

Not Before Tomorrow

 Rob

Coheed & Cambria - "When Skeletons Live"

Mr. T

Little Steven & The Disciples Of Soul - "Soul Power Twist"

G-Man

Chumbawamba - "Give The Anarchist A Cigarette"

Ever since "Tubthumping" i've been meaning to check out these guys' extensive catalog of songs. I knew they had to have other hidden gems, they were making music for 30 years afterall, before calling it a day back in 2012. "Amnesia" and "El Fusilado" are a couple of tracks to check out, but tonight's pick is the lead off track from their 1994 album Anarchy. "Give The Anarchist A Cigarette" a cool kind of folk-punky, sing-a-long song to get your Friday where you're going. Cheers!

Doug

Skydiggers - "Hello Beautiful Life"

Dano

Motorbike James - "Me"

Jonny HP

The Trews - "Ishmael & Maggie"

Mike D

Rezz, Grabbitz - "Someone Else"

RIP EVH

Unfortunately with the coming of Rocktober, typically comes the passing of some beloved and well know artists and musicians that have shaped and carved out the very corners of the musical landscape that the Song Of the Day crew gets their daily and influential anthems. Let's see if the recent and sudden passing of Eddie Van Halen has left a mark on their picks this week!

Rob

Radiohead - "Just"

Mr. T

Van Halen - "Top Jimmy"

I'm gonna throw 2 songs at you! One of the first CDs I received as a gift was Van Halen "1984". Played the shit out of that CD. So from 1984 to starlight Eddie's talent "Top Jjimmy"

Van Halen - "Dance The Night Away"

I Didn't realize how much of a Halen fan I was until I started listening again. This is my favourite Van Halen song. "Dance The Night Away"

G-Man

Van Halen - "Without You"

Never was the biggest Van Halen fan. Always appreciated EVH's guitar technique and the influence they had on rock and metal in the 80's and 90's. The first Van Halen song I admitted that I like was when they came back with Gary Cherone as their 3rd singer. "Without You". Still showcases Eddie's amazing guitar abilities I feel, and just brings you back to those late 90's when every 80's band was still grasping for air. Van Halen held on to it for a little longer here....more than most.

Doug

Van Halen - "Jump"

Did we all submit "Jump" as our songs this week? I am not surprised. ;)

Dano

Van Halen - "Hot For Teacher"

Jonny HP

Van Halen - "Running With The Devil"

Mike D

Julie and the Phantoms - "Perfect Harmony"

J.B.

Presidents Of The United States Of America - "Dune Buggy"

What happened?? Honestly?! OK you might think i'm referencing a certain political climate south of the border. But, no. The Presidents had this break out album in the mid 90s that was full of hits. Honestly, I cant think of one bad tune on it. Sure some of the better known bangers were beaten to death by pop radio. But, they just had it chalked full of great jams. No follow up that was notable or, even memorable. They were still touring prepandemic and kicking out a few of the classics. RIP American (political) presidents.

Light Of The Mourning

Rob

Elvis Costello & The Attractions - "Pump It Up"

Mr. T

Joe Walsh - "Life Of Illusion"

G-Man

Kim Mitchell - "Alana Loves Me"

Recently had a CanCon only Canada Day show on The Void Radio and obviously, had a lot of requests for Mr. Kim Mitchell. I've never really dove too deeply into his songbook, but damn, he's got some fantastic tunes. Definitely have a new found appreciation for the ol' Kimosabe.

Doug

Rhys Lewis - "No Right To Love You"

Dano

Hot Hot Heat - "Talk To Me Dance With Me"

Jonny HP

Beverly Hills Cop Theme

Mike D

Wheatus - "Teenage Dirtbag"

Special Guest Pick!

J.B

Oliver Tree - "Let Me Down"

After accidentally stumbling on this track recently, I needed more of the sound. Oliver Tree hasn't been on most people's radar since his first album in 2013 but has gained some pretty decent accolades from the likes of Thom Yorke and Skrillex. I think whats grabbed my attention on this track is the main guitar line that's eerily similar to the Pixie's 'Where is My Mind' and Tree's despondent voice. Either way this tune won't disappoint those of you looking for an indie Summer sound

Protest The Hero - "Sequoia Throne"

Green River Nixon

Couple new changes here at Song Of The Day Fridays! First of let's all welcome out newest song slinger Rick!! We're still trying out some handles for him, but he brings an ecclectic and unique taste in tunes! Secondly, from time to time you might see a joint-pick pop up on the blog! Two guys get together to recommend and highlight a pick! This week Rob and G-Man bring us Creed's 'My Own Prison'

Rob

The Wallflowers - "Letters From The Wasteland"

Mr. T

Orleans - "Still The One"

G-Man

Metallica - "My World"

I'm a huge Metallica fan and I love St. Anger. I know that's not a feeling that's shared even among fellow metal-heads. Hey, I get it, it's a little left of center, but I strongly feel that time will smile lovingly on this album. Even now you can see younger audiences warming up to it who weren't privy to all the swirling Metallica bashing that was trendy at the time of St. Anger's release. "My World" was never my favourite track on the album, but it grew on me. If it wasn't for it's foul-mouthed lyrics, I think it's the song from the album that would've lent itself the best to radio play.

Doug

Daft Punk - "Aerodynamic" Remix

Dano

Doc Watson - "Shady Grove"

Doc Watson - "Matty Groves"

Note from G-Man: "This guy digs groves"

Jonny HP

Volbeat - "16 Dollars"
