A Late Summer's Night Soundtrack

Rob

Rise Against - "Swing Life Away"

Note From G-Man: I Think I picked this once before as well. To me, there is one definitive version of this song...

Mr. T

Alannah Myles - "Love is"

G-Man

Meat Puppets - "We're Here"

Like most people I heard of these via Nirvana...Kurt Cobain's exclaimation that "All these songs are off their second record" in between "Oh, Me" and "Lake Of Fire" on the unplugged album. It's funny. He actually sounds happy when he talked about music he loved. The record in question is the Meat Puppets' II and man is it a journey. On first listen you might just breeze by "Plateau" and the other songs that Nirvana made famous. It's folk-y, it's grungey, it's odd. It's beautiful. High. HIGH on my recommendation list for any music lover. Like all of us at SOTD.

Doug

Vampire Weekend - "A-Punk"

Dano

Thornley - "Come Again"

Thundercat - "Show You The Way" feat. Michael McDonald & Kenny Loggins

Jonny HP

Powerman 5000 - "Bombshell"

Same Title, Different Artist...No Covers!

There are so many songs out there by so many artists that there is bound to be some cross-over. We here at Song Of The Day Fridays decided to acknowledge this by picking two songs each with the same name, just done by different artists. And before you ask, No covers don't count. Some members really shone here while others seem to be struggling...let's see what they got for us....Rob?

Rob

Edwin - "Alive"

Pearl Jam - "Alive"

Mr. T

David Bowie - "Changes"

Tupac - "Changes"

G-Man

Avail - "High Lonesome"

I will always let people introduce me to new music and if that means letting them do a huge dump of songs on my hard drive, so be it. What? Nothing wrong with that. That's how I discovered Avail, though there isn't much info about them online. Their song "High Lonesome" has made it on many of my punk mixes

The Gaslight Anthem - "High Lonesome"

The previous song helped me discover The Gaslight Anthem. I heard that they would be a band that I would dig but never heard a song by them. One day while perusing the CDs at Sunrise Records I saw their album The '59 Sound and checked it out. I saw a track on the back called "High Lonesome" and wondered if it was a cover. That curiousity and the recommendation was enough for me to purchase it and I must say I was a clever man that day. Perhaps my favourite driving CD ever...oh and it wasn't a cover. Just a great song by a great band

Doug

Dolly Parton - "Jolene"

Cake - "Jolene"

Dano

Metallica - "Mama Said"

Note from G-Man: Decent

Puscifer - "Momma Sed"

Jonny HP

TBD

Note from G-Man: Where you at Jonny?

Doug

Notorious B.I.G. - "Party & Bullshit"

Dano

Brick & Mortar - "Locked In A Cage"

Hundred Reasons - "I'll Find You"

Along with a pick from a few weeks ago, Hundred Reasons is a group i've recently discovered. A British punk/alt-rock group who got their start in the early 2000's. This one is a true song of the day as it was stuck in my head all day.

The Box Tops - "The Letter"

"Do you know "The Letter" by The Box Tops is a minute and fifty-eight seconds long. Means nothing. But it takes them less than two minutes to accomplish what it takes Jethro Tull hours to not accomplish." - Lester Bangs

Doug

The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion - "Bellbottoms"

Dano

Blues Saraceno - "The River"

Jonny HP

A Great song introduced to me by my fiance. This one is taken from the Django: Unchained soundtrack, which i've only seen the first scene twice and fell asleep. Im sure the movie is great, it's just the situation I was in that made me tired. Great song from a great song writer!

Doug

Headstones - "Unsound"

Dano

The Sword - "(The Night The Sky Cried) Tears Of Fire"

The White Buffalo - "Insane"

Jonny HP

Rob

Incubus - "Nimble Bastard"

Mr. T

Don Henley - "Sunset Grill"

G-Man

Metallica - "No Remorse"

I play ultimate twice a week. It wouldn't be Summer without Ultimate Frisbee. Nothing gets me more pumped before a game than my ol' fave Metallica. I always felt Kill 'Em All was a punk/metal infused album. So Good. "No Remorse" is exactly what we gave that team tonight

Doug

Johnny Cash - "One Piece At A Time"

I heard it this week and made me think of an old coworker stuffing his pockets with stainless nuts and bolts from the stock because "No one cares if you only take a few"..

Dano

Mastodon - "Creature Lives"

Mastodon - "Spectrelight"

Jonny HP

For All Those Sleeping - "Hell or Heaven"

Rob

Sparta - "Assemble The Empire"

Mr. T

Otis Redding - "Sittin' On The Dock Of The Bay"

G-Man

Rival Schools - "Wring It Out"

I Love discovering new music. Go to Last.fm, search for a band you dig and check out the similar artist section. Pick a band and take a look at their top rated track. Youtube it and absorb the music. I discovered this song by doing just that with Sparta.

Doug

Kid Koala - "Was He Slow?"

Dano

Grady - "Woman Got My Devil"

Jonny HP
