Like most people I heard of these via Nirvana...Kurt Cobain's exclaimation that "All these songs are off their second record" in between "Oh, Me" and "Lake Of Fire" on the unplugged album. It's funny. He actually sounds happy when he talked about music he loved. The record in question is the Meat Puppets' II and man is it a journey. On first listen you might just breeze by "Plateau" and the other songs that Nirvana made famous. It's folk-y, it's grungey, it's odd. It's beautiful. High. HIGH on my recommendation list for any music lover. Like all of us at SOTD.

We here at Song Of The Day Fridays decided to acknowledge this by picking two songs each with the same name, just done by different artists. And before you ask, No covers don't count. I will always let people introduce me to new music and if that means letting them do a huge dump of songs on my hard drive, so be it. What? Nothing wrong with that. That's how I discovered Avail, though there isn't much info about them online. Their song "High Lonesome" has made it on many of my punk mixes

The Gaslight Anthem - "High Lonesome"

The previous song helped me discover The Gaslight Anthem. I heard that they would be a band that I would dig but never heard a song by them. One day while perusing the CDs at Sunrise Records I saw their album The '59 Sound and checked it out. I saw a track on the back called "High Lonesome" and wondered if it was a cover. That curiousity and the recommendation was enough for me to purchase it and I must say I was a clever man that day. Perhaps my favourite driving CD ever...oh and it wasn't a cover. Just a great song by a great band
