Broken Open

 Mr. T

Lutan Fyah - "Game Is Over"

G-Man

The New Pornographers - "Whiteout Conditions"

I feel like even i've been sleeping on these guys and I own some of their albums. They never cease to amaze me with their "so-simple-why-didn't-I-think-of-it?" songwriting that just has this long lasting indelible quality. Basically I recommend everything and anything these guys do. Should be a truly proper Canadian Musical export.

Xmas By The Amplifier Hum

4 days away folks! It's Christmastime again and we here at Song Of The Day have decided to once again showcase some of our favourite Holiday tunes!! Rob.....get it on...

Rob-nosed Reindeer

Eve 6 - "Noel Noel"

Mr. Tanenbaum

Run DMC - "Christmas In Hollis"

Giftwrapped-Man

No Doubt - "Oi To The World"

Not sure if i've picked this one for Xmas in the past or not. Ah, screw it. Nothing more fun than that infectious bass line and Gwen Stefani's vocals recanting a tale of race drive gang violence quashed by the magic of Christmas. It's originally a Vandals tune, but I dig this version's energy a little more.

Doug by the Chimney With Care

Bing Crosby - "Silent Night"

Little Dano Boy

Bad Religion - "What Child Is This"

Bad Religion - "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen"

Bad Religion - "Hark! The Herald Angels Sing"

Jolly HP

Rise Against - "Making Christmas"

The Long Weekend Begins With A Shortcoming...

Rob

Billy Ocean - "Get Outta My Dreams, Get Into My Car"

Mr. T

KC & The Sunshine Band - "Give It Up!"

G-Man

Billy Joel - "The Downeaster Alexa"

Billy Joel has always been a old favourite fallback of mine. When I have kids, especially a son, I will use the words of Mr. Joel to teach him some serious life lessons. It's one thing I admire about Joel is his lyrics are always interesting and never lazy, often changing the words of the chorus each time through. This song is a lesser known track, but it showcases his talents wonderfully. It's a lament about the plight of the Long Island Fishermen, an industry close to Joel's heart, but one that has faded from relevance

Doug

Nas - "Adam & Eve"

Dano

Robert Plant - "Shine It All Around"

Jonny HP

Rise Against - "3 Day Weekend"

A Late Summer's Night Soundtrack

Rob

Rise Against - "Swing Life Away"

Note From G-Man: I Think I picked this once before as well. To me, there is one definitive version of this song...

Mr. T

Alannah Myles - "Love is"

G-Man

Meat Puppets - "We're Here"

Like most people I heard of these via Nirvana...Kurt Cobain's exclaimation that "All these songs are off their second record" in between "Oh, Me" and "Lake Of Fire" on the unplugged album. It's funny. He actually sounds happy when he talked about music he loved. The record in question is the Meat Puppets' II and man is it a journey. On first listen you might just breeze by "Plateau" and the other songs that Nirvana made famous. It's folk-y, it's grungey, it's odd. It's beautiful. High. HIGH on my recommendation list for any music lover. Like all of us at SOTD.

Doug

Vampire Weekend - "A-Punk"

Dano

Thornley - "Come Again"

Thundercat - "Show You The Way" feat. Michael McDonald & Kenny Loggins

Jonny HP

Powerman 5000 - "Bombshell"

Friday Songs!!! Get 'em in ya!!!

Rob

Sparta - "Assemble The Empire"

Mr. T

Otis Redding - "Sittin' On The Dock Of The Bay"

G-Man

Rival Schools - "Wring It Out"

I Love discovering new music. Go to Last.fm, search for a band you dig and check out the similar artist section. Pick a band and take a look at their top rated track. Youtube it and absorb the music. I discovered this song by doing just that with Sparta.

Doug

Kid Koala - "Was He Slow?"

Dano

Grady - "Woman Got My Devil"

Jonny HP

Rise Against - "The Violence"

Chris Cornell Tribute: Song Of The Day May 18, 2017

Whether you were a fan of his music or any of his bands there is no denying that Chris Cornell permeated your life at one point or another. "Black Hole Sun" has been played at least once a day on rock radio since it was released back in 1994. He's had an extensive solo career and been a part of other bands like Audioslave and Temple Of The Dog. The news of his suicide yesterday has saddened and baffled music lovers worldwide. We here at Song Of The Day Fridays are no exception. There was no rule to pick a Chris Cornell song this week, so we'll see if any or all us did. RIP Chris Cornell.

Rob

Audioslave - "Cochise"

Jimmy Eat World - "23"

Mr. T

Dan Farber - "Smoke That"

G-Man

Chris Cornell - "You Know My Name"

Wasn't the biggest Soundgarden fan, but knew Cornell was very talented. This is my absolute favourite song he ever did. He had a great voice and an obvious love of music and performing. I he found whatever peace he felt was missing in his life. The theme song for Casino Royale back in 2005. The best Bond theme song.

Rise Against - "Satellite"

If the lead singer of Rise Against passes away I doubt the rock world will be as shook as it was today, which is a shame. The last 15 or so years Rise Against has released consistent and important hard rock music. Started as a fringe punk band and now can sell out stadiums. This is a newer song by them that I can't get out of my head.

Doug

Chris Cornell - "Nothing Compares To You"

Dano

Gillian Welch - "The Way It Goes"

Audioslave - "I Am The Highway"

Soundgarden - "Fresh Tendrils"
