Upside Down O

 Rob

Smashing Pumpkins - "Tonight, Tonight"

Note From G-Man: "Great way to kick us off"

Mr. T

Stephen Marley - "Traffic Jam"

G-Man

Helmet - "In The Meantime"

When I was younger I got picked on quite a bit. One of the main culprits often wore a Helmet T-shirt. The one with the alien shaking the guy's hand? For this sole reason I really never gave the band that much of a chance. Sure I knew a couple tracks, "Unsung" and their cover of "Army Of Me", but anytime I heard a song by them or heard their name, it brought back unpleasant memories. Sometimes you just gotta say enough is enough and stare that fucker straight in the eye. I've been warming up to Helmet lately, which is great because they are the type of dysfunctional, heavy and frigged up music that I could've used for the past 20 years. Thankfully as I get older, the music stays the same.

Doug

Rascal Flatts - "Bless The Broken Road"

Dano

The Dead Tongues - "Wild Perfume"

Jonny HP

The Arcade Fire - "Rebellion (Lies)"

Mike D

Califnoria

It's been a quick minute since we've been around these waters yes? Life is like that sometimes! THe boys are back with a new slew of songs for y'all! Kick us off Rob!

Rob

Rage Against The Machine - "Down Rodeo"

G-Man, Dano and Myself recently got talking about groups we would like to see with things opening back up. I must admit, this group wasn't my top pick yet they are SO on my bucket list! Missed a chance due to COVID yet it's one group I can't wait to see!

Mr. T

Joe Walsh - "Midnight Moodies"

G-Man

Lungfish - "Friend To Friend In The End Time"

I was saving this one in my back pocket until the blog was back up and running. Music is so great. So vast and unrelenting. I love 90's music, especially alt-rock. Especially that obscure stuff. It's always amazing to me how much great music each decade has to continuously offer. All the 90's music has been released, but I can still be amazed by it. Lungfish were from Baltimore and never really elevated beyond a cult status. Though with tracks like this, it's tough to imagine how.

Doug

Bon Jovi - "Born To Be My Baby"

Dano

Royal Blood - "Mad Visions"

Jonny HP

Metallica - "Master Of Puppets"
*LOST PICK*

Mike D

Children Of Nova - "The Complexity Of Light"

Sorry I had fallen asleep

J.B.

Biz Markie - "Just A Friend"

RIP to a legend of the Hip Hop community. From beatboxing to mix master, the Diabolical did it all and definitely helped make the scene main stream.

What was your first concert?

It's theme week here at Song Of The Day Fridays!! Since the lot of us here are lifelong music lovers, Mr. T had the idea that we should all pick a song from the first band we ever saw in concert! A fun little trip down memory lane and a glimpse into the histories of the SOTDF members! Bring back live music!!! Rob, start us off!

Rob

The Tragically Hips - "Poets"

First concert I attended...Canada's The Tragically Hip. It was a rainy day and my step sister had tickets with her friend. Woke up that morning to a crazy rainstorm and I overheard her mentioning that her friend had backed out on account of the rain. Right after she asked me "Want to see a band today?" I wasn't really into a specific type of music at the time but I listened to a variety of different artists and styles. I said "yes" but had no idea the magnitude this group would have in Canada and even up until their very last show they were always spectacular! This concert has shaped my musical influences ever since!!

Mr. T

The Who - "Baba O'Riley"

The first band I saw live was a big one...

G-Man

Moist - "Ophelia"

I'm kinda cheating here. The first actual concert I saw was Weird Al Yankovic, and while I don't think that's anything to be ashamed of, it was before I was even a fan of music and went with friends based on entertainment alone. Growing up in North Bay, we didn't get alot of bands stopping by on tour. We'd have a few classic rock groups come to our Summer Heritage Festival, but I mainly played in the grass while those bands were performing and can't even remember what the first one was. Flashforward to 1996 when i'm starting my CD collection. Wearing music shirts. Watching Much Music. I hear Moist is coming to town. Ask my mom to buy me a ticket and score one in the front row of the Capitol Centre. No opening band. Just them. David Usher throws water in my face and I catch a guitar pick. Great times.

Doug

Collective Soul - "Shine"

In the early 90's friends and I went to Landsdowne to see Aerosmith. Collective Soul opened for them and it was a great show!

Dano

The Blackwater Fever - "Back For You"

Jonny HP

Korn - "Shot Liver Medley"

Fuck, my first concert was Korn.....Family Values '98

Mike D

Backstreet Boys - "Shape Of My Heart"

Black & Blue tour...

J.B.

Treble Charger - "Ever She Flows"

Ok, ok, I get it. Some of you might think that's no comparison to seeing Moist or like my father in law seeing The Doors before they were even famous kinda shit. But honestly, start flipping through TC's repetoire and they have more than an extensive banger listing. It was an amazing show and my first shot at crowd surfing which I often fade back to and wish I could back up there one more time

Overmorrow

Rob

Coheed & Cambria - "Young Love"

Every once in a while you get the opportunity to hear a new and exciting band. I've featured alot of Coheed lately and G-Man and I even recorded our very own Balcony Boyz "Coheed Edition"!! So amazing and as always, Enjoy! www.thevoid-radio.com

Mr. T

T.Rex - "Thunderwing"

G-Man

Punch Brothers - "Julep"

I don't really know much about these guys, but I saw this video come up on my Youtube suggestions and felt like i've seen this album cover a bunch in my past. The song is an instant favourite and hopefully other songs by these guys will hold up as well

Doug

Sam Smith - "Time After Time"

Dano

Crooked Sill - "New Railroad"

Jonny HP

TBD

Mike D

Daft Punk - "Aerodynamic"

J.B.

Vacations - "Relax"

Thursday, 10 June 2021

Set Sail, Spiral

Rob

Mos Def - "Hip Hop"

Mr. T

Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers - "Rebels"

G-Man

Gwar - "Beauteous Rot"

One of my favourite heavy metal albums is Gwar's Violence Has Arrived from 2001. I mean look at that wicked album cover for starters. Gwar get a lot of flack for being kind of a tongue in cheek band, and yes they did start as a group of drunken art school mischief makers. This album though is a rebirth of technicalities and brutalities. Sonic metal sounds. With, of course, some of Oderus Urungus' trademark wit thrown in for good measure.

Doug

The Tragically Hip - "Ouch"

Dano

Deluxe - "Egarophobia"

Jonny HP

The Outfield - "Your Love"

Mike D

TBD

J.B.

Bon Iver - "Holocene"

Not Before Tomorrow

 Rob

Coheed & Cambria - "When Skeletons Live"

Mr. T

Little Steven & The Disciples Of Soul - "Soul Power Twist"

G-Man

Chumbawamba - "Give The Anarchist A Cigarette"

Ever since "Tubthumping" i've been meaning to check out these guys' extensive catalog of songs. I knew they had to have other hidden gems, they were making music for 30 years afterall, before calling it a day back in 2012. "Amnesia" and "El Fusilado" are a couple of tracks to check out, but tonight's pick is the lead off track from their 1994 album Anarchy. "Give The Anarchist A Cigarette" a cool kind of folk-punky, sing-a-long song to get your Friday where you're going. Cheers!

Doug

Skydiggers - "Hello Beautiful Life"

Dano

Motorbike James - "Me"

Jonny HP

The Trews - "Ishmael & Maggie"

Mike D

Rezz, Grabbitz - "Someone Else"

J.B.

TBD
