Looks like Rob and Jonny are still frozen...maybe some music will help them thaw out Rob TBD Mr. T Bag Raiders - "Shooting Stars"
G-Man MC Chris - "IG-88"
Recently saw the new Star Wars movie. This isn't a Star Wars blog so I won't launch into a lengthy review, but it got the juices flowing enough for me to want to pick a song inspired by that Galaxy far, far away...
Doug Flowers of Evil - "Introvert"
Nothing to do with Star Wars and nothing to do with the New Year. Just a catchy little diddy I heard the other day
GarlandMan Queen - "Radio Gaga"
I'm picking this song by Queen after seeing their performance of it from the 1985 Benefit Concert Live Aid. Queen's heyday was definitely behind them and even the band was uncertain about doing a festival style concert. What followed was one of the most memorable performances by the band. Freddie Mercury gave the show of his lifetime and effortless had the crowd in the palm of his hand, many of which weren't even there to see Queen. It's considered the show that brought on the resurgence of the band's popularity.
Revenge Of The Egg People - "Seasons Greetings Felony"
And just because we're close to Christmas...
Mr. Tanenbaum Bruce Springsteen - "Merry Christmas Baby"
J. Giels Band - "Whammer Jammer"
Garland-Man Hawksley Workman - "The Coldest Night Of The Year"
This one walks the fine line of being a Christmas song, it was included on Hawksley Workman's Christmas themed album Full Moon Eleven back in 2011. Though it's a cover of a Bruce Cockburn song which wasn't intended to be used for the holidays. It fits perfectly this time of yea though, not really happy nor sad. More introspective and isolated. Deep in self reflection among the happy masses.
Doug Ben Folds Five - "Brick"
One of my favourite Xmas songs ;)
Dano Estas Tonne & Reka Fodor - "Timeless Burn Out"
It's the second week of December so we've opened it up to the lads this week. Pick a Christmas/Holiday song if you'd like. Nothing written in stone. Let's see what we got
Rob Eve 6 - "Inside Out"
MerryT Darlene Love - "All Alone On Christmas"
G-Man Stone Sour - "Through Glass"
Still had a few tunes in the chamber to get through before dealing out the Christmas Cards. Maybe next week. Stone Sour is touch and go with me, i'm a huge Slipknot fan and think Corey Taylor is great. Come What(ever) May is a solid album. Got some gems
Baroness - "March To The Sea"
Thanks for introducing me to these guys Dano. I'm having a blast digging through their first 4 albums. I have a feeling i'll be hearing Purple in the near future.
G-Man Laura Jane Grace - "Random Hearts" (Tom Gabel)
Track one on her first solo album Heart Burns. Perfect feel for a track one. Knew the album was going to be something good from the early moments. Against Me's lead singer and main songwriter FYI.
Doug MSTRKRFT - "Bounce" feat. N.O.R.E & ISIS
I tried to think what songs I have listened to this week and this was the only one. I don't mean I have been listening to it constantly, I mean I have only listened to one song this week. Song of the week is tough.
G-Man Billy Talent - "Surrender"
Whoa...Billy and Billy. I'm not the biggest Billy Talent fan, but this song is great. Love the line "She wonders why i'm always in a good mood" Think about it.
Let's try and finish Rocktober on a high note and who knows, maybe next month will be a November to Remember?
Rob Blink 182 - "Don't Leave Me"
Huey Lewis & The News - "The Heart Of Rock n' Roll" Do you like Huey Lewis & The News?
Mr. T Dean Martin - "You're Nobody Until Somebody Loves You"
G-Man Santana - "Put Your Lights On" feat. Everlast
Aeons ahead of it's time Santana put out a fantastic album in 1999 which saw his classic rock style guitar paired with then current artists effectively introducing 2 generations to a new style of music. It's a format still copied today. Santana has said that his favourite track on Supernatural was his duet with Everlast, and while I dig the Latin vibes of "Maria, Maria", i'm inclined to agree with Carlos. My old man does too.
This was supposed to be Rocktober part 3. It's been a difficult month. There were no rules this week. We thank Gord and dedicate our picks to him in anyway we felt appropriate
Rob The Tragically Hip - "Gift Shop"
The Tragically Hip - "Grace, Too"
Mr. T The Eagles - "There's A Hole In The World Tonight" Note from G-Man: No Youtube video for this. Are The Eagles stingy on their stuff being online? Here's a Vimeo link though... https://vimeo.com/144432435 G-Man The Flatliners - "Eulogy"
You will not be forgotten, you will be celebrated. RIP Gord.
Doug Gord Downie - "Hallelujah"
Dano Gordon Lightfoot - "The Wreck Of The Edmund Fitzgerald"
G-Man Pantera - "Cowboys From Hell"
It's impossible for me to hear this song and not be whisked back to the Summer of 2006. My first car that was officially mine....Fixxxer. Black '95 Sunfire. Loved rippin' around town in that thing despite how much of a bucket of bolts it was. It was mine. Paid straight cash. It had an updated soundsystem with one of those late 90's early 2000's CD players that lit up blue and orange. Naturally I had to make a mix CD to commemorate my first no-fucks-given-mobile....Fixxxer Mixxx!! Track one? Pantera and The Cowboys From Hell
Doug Ed Sheeren - "Perfect"
Dano Shakey Graves - "Late July"
Jonny HP Paul Simon - "You Can Call Me Al" Happy Birthday to Jonny HP! From all of us at Song Of The Day Fridays!
Lots going on this week. Death of a music icon and one of our writer's birthdays. It's almost a double wide affair! Let's see what the first post of Rocktober brings!
Rob The Fully Down - "Feel Alive"
The Fully Down - "Never Enough"
Mr. T Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers - "Jammin Me"
Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers - "Learning To Fly"
G-Man Matthew Sweet - "Sick Of Myself"
Me and this guy share a birthday. So I thought i'd celebrate by picking two of his tracks!
Matthew Sweet - "Girlfriend"
Doug Tom Petty - "Breakdown"
Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers - "I Won't Back Down"
Dano Norah Jones - "Creepin' In" feat. Dolly Parton
G-Man James - "Laid"
No real rhyme or reason behind my TWO picks this week...just some great music that came rolling through my ears these past few days
G-man Social Distortion - "Reach For The Sky"
Was talking with Rob today about Living Legends. It's bullshit when an artist dies and everyone acts like they've always been their biggest fan. Where was this love while they were still with us? That's why I like honouring Living Legends from time to time. Social Distortion is on that list for me. Always been a huge fan, mad respect for what they've done for punk music and Mike Ness is a certified individual/bad ass. Bucket list band for sure
G-Man Sunny Day Real Estate - "Seven"
Widely considered to be the first big "Emo" band and their debut album Diary came out in 1994. The list of bands these guys inspired is nearly endless. Just great energy in this song. And a dynamite chorus!
Doug The Killers - "The Man"
Dano Rage Against The Machine - "Vietnow"
Jonny HP Brand New - "The No Seatbelt Song"
Special Guest Pick Lady Madonna The Strokes - "12:51" Jonny HP's lady
G-Man Sugar Ray - "Answer The Phone"
Not sure what these guys did to get such a bad rep nowadays, guess it's the whole Nickelback stigma all over again. Sugar Ray had some great tunes and great Summer time tunes. It may be September but im sure theres some Summer left.
Rob Rise Against - "Swing Life Away" Note From G-Man: I Think I picked this once before as well. To me, there is one definitive version of this song...
Mr. T Alannah Myles - "Love is"
G-Man Meat Puppets - "We're Here"
Like most people I heard of these via Nirvana...Kurt Cobain's exclaimation that "All these songs are off their second record" in between "Oh, Me" and "Lake Of Fire" on the unplugged album. It's funny. He actually sounds happy when he talked about music he loved. The record in question is the Meat Puppets' II and man is it a journey. On first listen you might just breeze by "Plateau" and the other songs that Nirvana made famous. It's folk-y, it's grungey, it's odd. It's beautiful. High. HIGH on my recommendation list for any music lover. Like all of us at SOTD.
Doug Vampire Weekend - "A-Punk"
Dano Thornley - "Come Again"
Thundercat - "Show You The Way" feat. Michael McDonald & Kenny Loggins
There are so many songs out there by so many artists that there is bound to be some cross-over. We here at Song Of The Day Fridays decided to acknowledge this by picking two songs each with the same name, just done by different artists. And before you ask, No covers don't count. Some members really shone here while others seem to be struggling...let's see what they got for us....Rob?
Rob Edwin - "Alive"
Pearl Jam - "Alive"
Mr. T David Bowie - "Changes"
Tupac - "Changes"
G-Man Avail - "High Lonesome"
I will always let people introduce me to new music and if that means letting them do a huge dump of songs on my hard drive, so be it. What? Nothing wrong with that. That's how I discovered Avail, though there isn't much info about them online. Their song "High Lonesome" has made it on many of my punk mixes
The Gaslight Anthem - "High Lonesome"
The previous song helped me discover The Gaslight Anthem. I heard that they would be a band that I would dig but never heard a song by them. One day while perusing the CDs at Sunrise Records I saw their album The '59 Sound and checked it out. I saw a track on the back called "High Lonesome" and wondered if it was a cover. That curiousity and the recommendation was enough for me to purchase it and I must say I was a clever man that day. Perhaps my favourite driving CD ever...oh and it wasn't a cover. Just a great song by a great band
Doug Dolly Parton - "Jolene"
Cake - "Jolene"
Dano Metallica - "Mama Said" Note from G-Man: Decent
